"Is solar actually worth it, or is it just hype?" It's the question we hear most. The honest answer: for most Indian homes with a decent roof, yes — comfortably. But the details matter. Here's the no-spin breakdown.

The short answer

If your monthly electricity bill is above ₹2,500 and you own your roof, rooftop solar almost always pays for itself in 4–6 years and then delivers nearly free power for another two decades. Over 25 years, a typical home saves ₹12–18 lakh.

If your bill is very low, or your roof is heavily shaded, the maths gets tighter — and we'll tell you honestly if it doesn't add up.

What drives your savings

Three things decide your return:

  • Your bill — bigger bills mean bigger savings. Solar offsets the most expensive units first.
  • Your location's sunlight — Rajasthan and Gujarat get more sun-hours than coastal or northern cities.
  • The subsidy — PM Surya Ghar takes up to ₹78,000 off residential systems. Read the subsidy guide.

The real costs (including the ones vendors skip)

A turnkey residential system runs ₹55,000–₹60,000 per kW before subsidy. That should include:

  • Tier-1 panels and a quality inverter
  • Mounting structure and cabling
  • Installation, net-metering and paperwork
  • Warranty and after-sales support

Beware quotes that look suspiciously cheap. They usually cut corners on the inverter or mounting — the two things that decide whether your system lasts 25 years or 5.

What about maintenance?

Less than people expect. Panels have no moving parts. You'll want to:

  • Rinse the panels every few weeks (more in dusty cities)
  • Get an annual health check
  • Keep an eye on your monitoring app

That's it. Panels carry a 25-year performance warranty; inverters typically 5–10 years.

When solar is not worth it (yet)

We believe in being straight with you. Hold off if:

  • You rent and can't get owner permission
  • Your roof is small, north-facing or heavily shaded all day
  • You're about to move within a year or two

So, should you do it?

For the large majority of homeowners with a ₹3,000+ bill, solar is one of the best returns you can get on a home investment — tax-free, inflation-proof and good for the planet.
